School logoNun Monkton School is a primary co-educational day school for children from 4-11 years old. Although it is a Foundation school it is maintained by North Yorkshire County Council and serves the villages of Nun Monkton, Moor Monkton, Whixley and the surrounding area.

As we are a small school, the staff know each child very well and is able to cater to their individual need. Through a caring and friendly environment we give a great emphasis on the creative as well as academic curriculum which teaches the necessary skills the children need to move on to the next stage in their education.

The children move onto various High Schools when they leave Nun Monkton. Recent pupils moved onto St. Aidan's in Harrogate, King James' in Knaresborough, Manor in York, Ripon Grammar, Cundall Manor and Boroughbridge.

Ths school occupies an enviable position overlooking the 18-acre village green, duck pond and maypole. It is both physically and socially the centre of village life and has excellent links with the community. Being so fortunate to have such an idyllic location, the children make good use of the green during playtimes and the wider village for lessons.

The school has an excellent reputation not only for delivering the core subjects of the National Curriculum but also, thanks partly to the excellent teacher to pupil ratio, in delivering a curriculum tailored to the needs of the children who are encouraged to be responsible for their own learning as much as is possible. Visitors comment on the hard-working, friendly, family atmosphere that is appropriate for such a village school.

The school is housed in a building just over 100 years old which, due to an ambitious series of building projects over the past decade, has been transformed into a setting truly suited to the needs of modern schooling. The original classroom, which now has two Smartboards, has been added to and there is now an Office, ‘The Resource Room’ (used for lessons and as a library) and ‘The Snug’ (used for smaller groups, also with a Smartboard).

In a recent survey of parents, the things which they believed made Nun Monkton an excellent school are, to name but a few, the staff:pupil ratio, the teachers, the school’s location, involvement with the community and the friendly and caring environment. The children said they thought it was down to the teachers, delicious school dinners, the fact that the school is so well equipped, the ICT provision and the use of the village green for play and lessons.
